Nova Display Systems - Creating & Submitting Your Print Files

Creating & Submitting Your Print Files ...

For best results, please send a color hard copy proof so that we can verify the color accuracy of our output/printing to your expectations.
• Our digital output devices are CMYK.
• PMS Pantone colors should be specified within the file and on your hard copy proof. We will match PMS colors as closely as possible although we may not be able to color correct embedded/placed art files.
• Include all images that have been placed or imported into the final layout of your file. These images files are important to the quality of your final print.
Scanned images should be scanned at no less than 300 DPI at 0.25" size of the final output/printed piece.
• Include all fonts in your documents. When using Postscript fonts (Type 1 fonts) supply both screen and printer fonts.
• Prepare all your graphic files in accordance with Artwork / Print File Setup Guidelines
• Send/upload your files directly through our FTP (File Transfer Interface) or via YouSendIt!

Nova Display Systems - Full Color Digital Graphic Key Terms

Full Color Digital Graphic Key Terms ...

Color Models:
• The RGB color model uses a dot pattern of red, green and blue light to reproduce a full color image. It is used by scanners and monitors.
• The CMYK color model uses a dot pattern of cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks or toners to reproduce a full color image. It is used by virtually all digital printers.
• Spot Color - printing a specific solid color. The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a defined set of spot-color inks used in the commercial printing industry. CMYK printers can only simulate spot colors, some better than others. The best way to ensure a match is to pick a CMYK color from a chart printed on the machine that will ultimately make your full color graphic.

Raster Graphic File Format:
Raster artwork is any digital art composed of horizontal and vertical rows of pixels. As a result, when raster images are enlarged, the image quality diminishes significantly. Typical raster file types include .psd, .tif, .jpg, .gif, and .bmp.

DPI:
An abbreviation for "dots per inch", a measure of the density of ink dots used to reproduce the image. The more dots in the image, the higher the image clarity and the better the ability to enlarge that image. More important than the DPI is the total number of dots in a file. For large-format printing, a good rule of thumb is to plan for 100 to 150 dpi at the final printed size. For example, if you wish to have an image printed 24" x 36", then your computer file should have a minimum of 2,400 dots (24" x 100 dpi) by 3,600 dots (36" x 100 dpi), for a total of 8,640,000 dots. At an average of 3 bytes of storage per dot, that's about a 24mb file. Anything less simply won't have the quality you expect.

Viewing Distance:
Determines the DPI required. If your graphic will be viewed at close range, you will need a higher DPI. If it will be seen from a distance, a lower DPI image may give you all the resolution you need, saving time and money. For large applications, like banners, you can often come down from the 300 to 150 dpi ideal without sacrificing quality.

Vector Graphic File Format:
Vector artwork is digital art composed of mathematical lines and curves. As a result, vector images can be reduced or enlarged in size indefinitely, without any loss in image quality. Typical vector file types include .ai, .eps, .ps, .indd, .pdf, and .cdr.
